“In-Group Bias”
What is In-Group Bias?
The tendency to treat others more favorably when they are perceived to be a member of one’s own group.
Business Relevance
It is well known that fellow college alumnus, fraternity or sorority members, and other group relations can break the ice during a professional meeting.
Difficulty
People don’t broadcast their group associations and any inquiry may come off as an unnatural “fishing” for a personal connection.
Everyday Application
People will better identify with you if you can find common ground such as where you grew up, where you went to school, where you do volunteer work, or whether you explore niche hobbies. It’s the likely reason many large corporations force employees to endure those horrid ice-breaker games at orientation.
Try to research your prospect beforehand for a personal connection that you truly relate to. Don’t try to force a personal connection because you will come off as inauthentic.
