“Cryptomnesia”
What is Cryptomnesia?
Cryptomnesia happens when a forgotten memory returns but the memory is thought to be a new or original idea.
Business Relevance
We see this a lot when comics “steal” each other’s work and say that they happened to think if it separately. In the workplace, this often occurs when a talented employee suggests a change or implementation to a manager. Ideas are often shut down, only to be resurrected several months later as a unique contribution from the manager who believes they thought the idea up themselves.
Difficulty
When this occurs, it’s impossible to determine if an idea is actually stolen out of malice or if the person is truly experiencing Cryptomnesia. Accusations of dishonesty can create unnecessary conflict.
Everyday Application
When it comes to clients, it doesn’t matter who thought of the idea as long as they engage you as their source to execute it. Planting good ideas, practical applications, or customized solutions that your company can implement is a great way to build rapport but be sure to keep following up so you are the first person they think of when they have their “aha!” moment.
