What is the Toupee Fallacy?
You don’t know what you don’t know. A well designed trick will make you none-the-wiser to its existence.
Business Application
This type of thinking is a poison for personal development. The assumption here is that there is a peak in learning and that it has already been attained.
Don’t get too cocky. The best detectives, entrepreneurs, and sales reps constantly surprise themselves by pushing toward self-improvement and professional development. No one is incapable of being fooled.
Example 1
“I’ve seen all the tricks in my years as a manager. If they try to fool me, they don’t stand a chance.”
Why This is a Fallacy
A manager may have seen many tricks pulled by employees over the years but there is no way to identify which tricks went unnoticed.
Example 2
“I’ve closed every deal that is capable of being closed.”
Why This is a Fallacy
Without reading the minds of lost business, there is no way to know for sure the reasons behind a disinterested prospect.
