What is Balance Fallacy?
Making two concepts equal because it seems ‘fair’ or because they appear to be similar.
Business Application
Nothing is cut and dry. Two sides rarely have equal weight. Careful consideration should be explored when assigning value. Value is often determined via a multitude of factors and not just one aspect.
Example 1
You’re the Tech expert, and I’m the Sales expert. It makes complete sense to just split the company 50/50.
Why This is a Fallacy
The simple comparison of expertise makes the even split feel fair, however, the responsibilities, workload, methodologies, and other factors will weigh into whether meeting halfway is the correct distribution of equity.
Example 2
I was wrong to ignore the deadline but you were wrong for not reminding me it was coming up so let’s just accept that we were both wrong and move on.
Why This is a Fallacy
It is possible for someone to be ‘more wrong’ when multiple mistakes occur.
